Our bed and breakfast in Portugal's rural Alentejo region is a large, romantic country house 4km outside the historic walled town of Elvas with views into Spain, set in two hectares with olive and orange groves and our own swimming pool..  We are approximately 2.5 hours from Seville airport and 2 hours from Lisbon airport, both via empty motorways.

The area offers good bird watching and year round carp fishing.  There is also horse riding locally.  There is a BBQ by the pool and a fridge and washing machine available for guests' use. Satellite TV is also available in the main house guest sitting room. English owners. Recently selected for Alastair Sawday's 'Special Places to Stay -Portugal' .  We have been featured in the Sunday Independent Travel' Section 6th May 2007 http://travel.independent.co.uk/europe/article2517011.ece   and in The Guardian '20 rural retreats in Portugal' http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/mar/25/portugal.escape?page=4

New 2008 - Poolside recreation area, paved, shaded, huge BBQ, fridge, boules court, darts, golf pitching.

Around the house we have swallows nesting in the well and a pair of owls that sit above the marble table in our courtyard awaiting twilight with the bats. Collect eggs from our free range hens and meet Shah our male peacock. You’ll pretty much have the house and grounds to yourselves starting with breakfast. Private space to read or to be, inside or out, is plentiful, as is shade in the mature gardens when needed. We pick oranges and lemons from our twenty or so trees (plus seasonal figs, quinces, pomegranates, almonds, loquats, grapefruit, asparagus, kumquats, tomatoes, pimentoes) and have a stall on the village market every other week for our plants. We are around when you want and our small garden nursery leaves us time for advice if invited. We know the surrounding area and are happy to advise on walks, visits, dining out, horse riding and any local events.  Cool box available for picnics by the Guardiana or elsewhere.
